No no. It's kinda like driving past a car accident--ya just have to take a peek.
Seriously, neither of you is an idiot or an asshole. Obviously this is a hot issue. And I think it's easy to see that the USA has to do _something_. And I think it's easy to see ( given recent opinion polls in Iraq, for example) that going balls out offensive may backfire, resulting in an even bigger terrorism problem.
What's the solution? I dunno. But what we're doing right now doesn't seem all that effective and is likely harmful. Then again, perhaps we've thwated grand-scale attacks by skullfscking Iraq and Afghanistan, supporting Israel against Hezbollah and getting into bed with Pakistan. N Korea seems to be a larger threat (lobbing test rockets in the general vicinity of Japan) than any other country, IMO. Iran with nukes, soveriegn or not, is rather scary. All of these things need to be addressed. Constructive or at least civil dialogue between nations and individuals is most likely to get the ball rolling in the right direction.
