  I'm not sure this is totally convincing. It is the children and   
grandchildren of the  original immigrants who appear to be most  
alienated in both England and France. They may have totally different  
expectations than the original immigrants. And the original  
immigrants may have been willing to put up with  some discrimination  
simply for economic opportunity.
