I did, but then that's how all these things appear. "mad as cheese"  
is a recent thing and used by the Register to prove that they're  
wacky guys, full of spunk and all that.

Does it matter. If it sounds right, use it.

Mad as a stick I use a lot. I never really worried about how it  
sounded. Similarly a battlecry from a 1990s superhero game, cribbed  
from some TV program, "you're going home in a fucking ambulance" is  
now used as a term of endearment.

I love English because it's so flexible.
