No way. I've heard this point of view expressed and I completely  
disagree. Being eaten by a croc would have implied he was wrong about  
them and they were dangerous, contrary to his life's work. Being  
eaten by a croc would have told the world "Crikey! I was wrong!"

Being killed by a fish means that no matter what, he beat every croc  
he met.
