You cannot compare men in a war with your average person in
peacetime. Have you looked at ingredients in most things you get
today? It's all HFCS and various sugars and sweeteners. Combine
that with fast food and the fact most people do less manual labor
type jobs and you will see that it's not as simple as "eat less you
fatty".
I'd love to see the studies you allude to.
