It's not really on topic with the central point of this thread but I
had a conversation yesterday with a friend who knows a young woman
recently diagnosed with Cushing's syndrome. As she ballooned up as a
result of the disease, many people treated her very cruelly, blaming
her for her condition and treating it as evidence of a character
flaw. The irony is that she is an AIDS researcher who works with
people who are horrified at the notion that having gay sex is a
'choice' and reveals a character flaw.

My point is that the extent to which any behavior is voluntary or
compelled is a continuum that varies from person to person. You
can't tell from the outside how much 'choice' a person has over
their action. It's best to err on the side of kindness.
