Oh, kids learn 'selfish' right off the bat. It's one of the first
causes of conflict ("He took my toy!" "He won't share his toys!" "He
took the bigger piece!").
That said, with a kid up to about 4, the majority of teaching is
"don't do that" and it isn't until they start asking why they
shouldn't that you need to start explaining yourself. Simple
explanations are best ("Because it's hot" "because you'll get hurt"
"because it's rude" etc). More detailed explanations of these
concepts come as they get older.
