A person can believe in something
personally, while acknowledging that it cannot be
proven to others. Such a person remains a
scientist as far as I'm concerned.
It would be irrational to continue to
believe such a thing if definite evidence against
came along, but in cases where no evidence either
way is likely to surface? Sure.
