The Carolinas and Georgia began as penal colonies; Eventually
criminals (mainly debtors, hell my founding ancestor was a Scottish
Jacobite who was mercifully exiled instead of executed as was the
usual practice) were spread through all the colonies, and lets not
forget that the loss of the US colonies prompted the exploitation of
Australia as a replacement.
And while the New England colonies were founded by "tight asses" most
of the others were not. Virginia was founded by adventurers and we
partied heartily while the Puritans were in control of England and
New England.
