I was fresh out of grad school looking for my first full time  
position.  With tenure-track openings at 1 opening for every 750  
applicants, you take what you can get.  Then you apply elsewhere  
after you have a few years under your belt.

So apply I did.  But I made a call to the chairperson to say hello,  
let him know about my interest and thank him for a talk he was going  
to give at a school I was adjuncting at.  He recognized the name and  
placed it with my book on St Albert's theory of the beatific vision.   
He asked point blank if I was catholic.  I said I was.  And he said  
that disqualifies me.  But we talked for a half hour.  I got him to  
tell me all about their rules for faculty (by pretending to agree  
with him about no smoking, drinking, dancing, etc) and he proudly  
told me the school's policies.

He ended by telling me I sounded like a perfect candidate.  And  
then:  It's really too bad you aren't evangelical.  You have to be  
saved to teach here.
That's exactly or almost exactly what he said.  You have to be  
saved.  Heh.

I really didn't know what I was looking at when I applied.

These folks have every right to believe what they do.

I have every right to put them <plonk> in the same basket weaving  
class as the Nazis.
